About Summerschool

The program for Summer School is jam packed. Whilst each day follows a set flow, you will find yourself engaging with lots of different opportunities, connecting with new and interesting people, and discovering more about yourself, others and God!

Here are some of the main activities, along with some information for the smooth running of the School.

Lectures & Seminars

A number of lectures and seminars are available during the week. They are designed to help us grow in our faith and understanding of God, ourselves, and our world. Lectures and seminars run for 5-days and 2-days respectively and are led by faithful presenters with relevant education and/or extensive life experience.

Mass

The Eucharist (Jesus present with us in the appearance of bread and wine) is central to each day at the School, and is a time of great rejoicing and celebration. Mass will be celebrated each day, in the Chapel. Please be on time.

Please respect the dress regulations for the Chapel: Dress modestly and wear shoes (for both men and women).

Mass times are as follows:
Sunday - 5:00pm
Monday-Wednesday - 10:00am
Thursday - 7:00pm
Friday - 10:00am
Saturday - 12:00pm
Sunday - 10:30am

Evening Sessions

The Evening Session begins at 7.30pm in the Main Tent. The format and theme is different each night, but will generally include Praise & Worship, followed by a teaching and time for prayer ministry.

Supper and Night Prayer follow immediately after the conclusion of the Evening Session.

Prayer Teams

There will be experienced prayer teams available during the week mostly during the Night Sessions.

The Pastoral Care Team can refer you to a prayer team if it becomes apparent you might need this type of assistance. Please talk to one of the Pastoral Care Team members (identified by a RED DOT on their name tag).

There will be many opportunities to experience different forms of prayer. Please see the page about prayer.

Sharing Group

Each person is allocated to a Sharing Group, which is a small group for support, sharing & discussion, and service. Your Group name is on your name tag. You will meet your Group for the first time on Sunday night. Most other days you will meet at 5pm.

Your Group Leaders are your first point of contact if you have any questions or difficulties at the School.

They will also be responsible for advising your Group of any duties at the School.

Further information about Sharing Groups can be found in the section later on in this booklet.

Meals

Meals will be held in the Dining Room. Please see your timetable for meal times. Meal times are great for meeting new people and catching up with old friends. You might like to sit with someone different at each meal.

Groups of people have been allocated to help set up or clean up after meals. Please make sure that you complete your job.

Please do not approach kitchen staff or go into the kitchen, but see one of the Summer School team with any questions about meals. The kitchen area is out of bounds at all times unless you are doing a meal set up or clean up job.

Recreation

Free time is scheduled from 2.00pm to 3.30pm on weekdays. You can choose to participate in a range of sport and recreation activities. These provide the break and exercise you’ll need to keep up with a busy schedule.

On Wednesday afternoon, there is extended free time. On Saturday afternoon we will attend a drama performance of The Screwtape Letters together, which will be a great way to spend our last afternoon during this life-changing week together.

Sport

Various sports equipment is available for free time. Announcements will be made about any hotly contested sporting matches taking place!  See Ethan Morson for more details.

Swimming

The pool is available for use during recreation times, provided an adult is present at all times. For safety, swimming is prohibited after dusk.

Summer School Concert

One of the great traditions of Summer School is the concert on Saturday night. You are invited to submit an act for the concert, and auditions will be held during the week. Be as creative as you like, but all acts must be in good taste!

Group Photo

A group photo will be taken on Tuesday 10th January straight after the plenary session and just before lunch at 12.30pm, outside the tent. A copy of the photo will be posted online.

There will be photographs taken by the organisers at the School. These may be used by the organisers for purposes pertaining to the Summer School. If you do not wish to have your photo used, please see Selina Hasham.

Daily Announcements

Announcements will be made by our MCs each day at the end of Mass, in the Plenary sessions and also at meal times when required. These will include important information about events during the School, as well any changes to the program. Please pay attention, as these announcements are important for the smooth running of the School.

Lights out & Curfew

Lights Out & Curfew has been set in order to give you the chance of a good night’s sleep. This is important if you are to keep up with the School’s vigorous schedule. For everyone’s benefit, we have a team of people who will be responsible for ensuring that minors are all in their dorms before Curfew. We also have Night Patrol and Security volunteers who will be supervising the grounds and common areas, to ensure that Curfew is observed and to ensure that everyone at Summer School is kept safe and respects others.

Please be considerate of other participants and respect Lights Out and sleep times.
