In the world but not of the world: Being a Catholic in the public square
Dr Joanna Howe
In this lecture series we will explore three questions:
(1) Where do the world's great needs and my gifts and desires meet?
(2) How do I make good choices when faced with so many options?
(3) Am I prepared to go against the tide?
Martin Luther King Jr wrote a letter from his Birmingham jail cell saying, "the nation and the world is in dire need of creative extremists". At the time King's battle against racism was extreme. He was viewed as an extremist. But now we look back at his pioneering work against racism and regard him as a hero.
Similarly, the abolitionists, the courageous men and women who fought against slavery in Britain or the suffragettes, the Australian women who fought for the right to vote - were mocked and ostracised for being on the minority side of a contemporary issue.
Ultimately they fought injustice and won.
This lecture series will help you discern your call in the world and inspire you to respond with courage and clarity.
